Red Mill in Autunn III by Regina Geoghan. This historic Red Mill located in Clinton New Jersey, AKA Red Mill Museum and Clinton Mill, sits on the banks of the South Branch of the Raritan River. The mill was listed as one of the top 25 most beautiful USA mills in the Feb 2016 edition of House Beautiful magazine. The earliest section of the Red Mill was built in the early 1800s to process wool. A downturn in tthe demand for wool cloth caused him to lose the business and in 1828 it was purchased by a new buyer who continued to process wool but diversified by grinding feed, flour and stone. This business also uttimately failed. After a series of failures, the site was split into a mill and a quarry and the mill was used to grind flour and grist. In late 1800s, the mill ownership changed multiple times and eventually was used to grind graphite and the mill was called the "Black Mill" due to the black dust. The owner turned then to grinding talc and the local name became "White Mill." The talc mill was in continuous operation until 1928 when the mill was sold to the Clinton Water Supply Company and operations were discontinued.
