Description
A view of the Great Falls of Paterson New Jersey with trees just coming into their spring color and a powerfull water flow in the Falls after spring rains. The Great Falls are located on the Passaic River in Paterson New Jersey. It is one the largest waterfalls in the United States. The Falls have had a significant role in the early industrial development of New Jersey. Alexander Hamilton, as the nation's Secretary of Treasury in the late 1700's, selected the site as the nation's first planned industrial city. Civil Engineer Pierre Charles L'Enfant was comissioned to design the system of canals that supplied the power for the watermills in the new town and Paterson became the site of the first water-powered cotton spinning mill in N.J. and subsequently became the area where many other types of industrial mills were located. Some products that used the Falls as a power source included Rogers Locomotive Works and Colt Revolver. The Falls were designated as an Histori Civil Engineering Landmark as of 1977. In 2009, the Falls were designated as the Paterson Great Falls National Historical Park, to be administered by the National Park Service.
