Description
Butterfly Ballet by Regina Geoghan. An image of Monarch butterflies nectaring on the flowers of a white butterfly bush. The Monarch butterfly is part of the genus Papilio and in the Nymphalidae family. It is one of the most loved butterflies and its beautiful orange and black wing pattern is familiar to most everyone. The Monarch is known for its southern migration in late summer from the United States and Canada to Mexico, flying thousands of miles. Sadly the Monarch population has declined signficantly in recent years due to loss of habitat and pesticides and the Monarch is in grave danger of extinction. The Monarch requires milkweed plants on their migration back North in order to lay their eggs and these plants are being damaged or destroyed across the nation, leaving no Monarch habitat. Monarch butterflies live two to eight weeks during the breeding season and only the last generation migrates back to the South. The Monarch is a pollinator and therefore important to our ecology. It is thought that the Monarch was named in nonor of King William III of England.
Very honored to share that this image was voted as FIRST PLACE winner by fellow artists in the Butterfly Flutterby contest May 2018.

I had the opportunity this fall to see thousands of these butterflies in migration! Nice one!
Regina Geoghan replied:
That's a sight I'd love to see Gary. What a treat it must have been. With the Monarch populations becoming so depleted, I hope that ways can be found to ensure that the populations begins to grow again. Thanks for the comment.
